And now for the dirt...
In 1980 Mike left school to work in the local coalmines while at the same singing lead vocals with professional clubland group Panache. Mike was by far the youngest member of the Band at the tender age of 16,
In 1984, Mike and two friends from the same area, Mark Henderson, and Paul Williamson formed the band CARLTON PARK, instantly proving a very popular act with clubgoers and agents alike, performing regularly up and down the country with their own unique blend of pop 'n' rock covers and excellent vocal harmonies. Such was the popularity of the act that after only 3 months on the circuit they were awarded the title Top Clubland Act at an award ceremony in Halifax, and on the night so many people travelled to the club to see them pick up the award, that the members of the club complained they couldnt get seats!!!
1984 was the year Mike turned fully professional, the line up for the band remained more or less the same for the next few years, and in 1989 they had a successfull tour of Germany performing for the British Armed forces and were lucky enough to be there the day the infamous Berlin wall finally came down.
1992 was the year Mike decided to go it alone as solo act under the stage name Mike Carlton, and had two very successful years performing around the UK
Then, in May '94 Mike came to Tenerife on holiday with his brother and a friend for two weeks and brought with him a few backing tracks with the intention of "just having a laugh". and it wasnt long before hed been bitten by the Tenerife bug, and by the end of the holiday had picked up over 15 weekly bookings in the various bars in and around Las Americas as a singer/entertainer... the holiday was nearly over and a decision had to be made, and quickly! ... go home back to clubland...? ...or stay in Tenerife...??
The rest is, as they say, is history... Mike decided to stay in Tenerife and give it a go. Cancelling his gigs in England (at short notice and much to the annoyance of his Agent) and after only a year performing around the island was offered a job as compere working full-time 6 nights a week at the Squinting Cat (now known as the Pheasant Plucker) after a short stint there he was offered the as job resident compere and Entertainments manager at one of THE top bar/restaurants in Tenerife, ST EUGENES where he has been ever since, and is now currently into his 15th successive year!
May 2008, and Mike is Voted COMPERE OF THE YEAR! at an award ceremony at EXIT PALACE Las Americas Tenerife
